Door-to-door solicitors are attracted to new homes and neighborhoods.
The best way to avoid door-to-door solicitations is to have a “No Soliciting” sign in your yard and/or near your front door. This does keep away a majority of door-to-door sales people.
If you do encounter a door knocker, tell them politely that soliciting is not allowed, that they are trespassing, and ask them to leave.
